Meaning and mythology:
Buddha (Sanskrit, Buddha, literally, "Awakened One", or "Enlightened One") in Buddhism someone is called who has "Bodhi" (literally "awakening" and "enlightenment") experience. In particular the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, means both himself and those who in prehistoric times, just like him, on their own, without the guidance of another Buddha, had gained the awakening. A Buddha is a being who by their own efforts has achieved perfection and purity of his mind, and thus has attained an infinite unfolding of all of "his" potential: wisdom (prajna) and infinite, however distant, compassion (karuna) with all that lives. He has already achieved Nirvana in his lifetime, and is according to Buddhist belief not anymore tied to the cycle of reincarnation (samsara). One cannot really talk about "his" mind, because this acquisition is of transcendent nature and not to grasp with the mind of the unawakened and is "deep and unfathomable as the ocean". Due to the highly transcendent nature of this experience it is far beyond any secular-scientific examination. The quality of the Buddha's experience is uncomprehensible for people who have not yet made this experience by themselves. The belief that some people have actually had such an experience is for them of quasi-religious nature, while they themselves remain trapped in their worldly reality. The word "Buddha" is in Sanskrit and derived Central Indian languages the original form of the participle in past tense passivi, "budh" from the verbal root meaning "wake up" - it means "the awakened one" and says that someone to whom this name is given: awakening from the night of error into the light of knowledge.
