Abalone paua shell: Jewels from the sea and one of the most enchanting gemstones. The abalone or paua shell is also known as "opal of the sea" or "sea opal" because of its colorful iridescent effects. The abalone sea snail is native to the Pacific and is called "paua" by the Maori. Strictly speaking, the New Zealand paua mussel is not a mussel at all, but a sea snail.
