SHIVA´S EYE
This extraordinary jewel has a unique and mysterious charisma. The "Eye of Shiva" - according to legend - always looks out for its bearer and symbolizes protection and good fortune. The "Thírd Eye" represents the eye of the hindu god of fertility Shiva who unites male and female qualities within him/herself. It is the center of knowledge and wisdom. The spiral on it's back is a very strong and important symbol for protection from evil forces - the evil eye - and symbolizes development and motion. Positive energy is bundled and amplified. Shiva's Eye has a generally positive effect on its bearer's well-being and it is intrinsically connected with tantric charms and religion.
The evil eye creates mostly diseases whose cause is just hard to explain. It affects especially women and young children. Infants can even die (through excessive shouting) as women can become infertile or get diseases in their birth organs.
Shiva's Eye is calcareous shell (operculum) of aragonite, which originates from the Turban snail, and although they since the earliest times are perceived as semi-precious stones, they are purely organic in nature. Often they are found at the beach and are usually referred as cat's eye. As early as the Stone Age they attracted the attention of people.
They are round, slightly curved on one side, usually flatter on the side of the spiral. They present often bulging luminous, green or red colors.
The Shiva Eye is certainly among the oldest amulets and it is associated with eyes since the dawn of mankind. Even in ancient Egypt cat's eyes were laid in the empty eye sockets of the mummies. Across Oceania and the North American Coast cat's eyes were used as masks adornments placed mainly in the eyes.
In Oceania particularly large shells are used as amulets to promote a gentle birth. The Europeans brought this tradition back from the South Sea explorations. They were seen as magical stones which should help to initiate an easy birth, because they act against poison and protect against dark magic and witchcraft. Even then, these precious cat's eyes were often set in gold or silver. In the early pharmacies they where frequently found and sold as an aphrodisiac or as a remedy for eye diseases, under the auspicious name Venus Abel. In Guinea the cat's eyes are even used as an exchange currency.
